Sign #1. We buy too many plants! The Crew has a lot of catching up to do thanks to a cold, wet spring that has instantly turned into a hot, dry summer. It's really been more like late winter, except without the snow. Anyway, Burt and Ivy seem to be dealing with the magical switch in the weather with their usual cheerfulness. It's even warm enough that the tender annuals we bought (overly optimistically) at the beginning of the month can survive outside.
Sign #2. The spring perennials have bloomed. Luckily, they are okay with cold weather - as long as they're not buried in snow.
Sign #3. Spenser has resumed his duties as the backyard monitor. After spending the winter keeping up his skills by watching birds and squirrels on YouTube, he seems happy to be back on the job.
Sign #4. The birdhouses get put up, or maybe not. We are lucky enough to have a pair of beautiful but very territorial cardinals living in our backyard. They prefer to build their nests out in the open, probably in our crabapple or the hedge, instead of raising their chicks in an enclosed space. In the past when we put out the birdhouses for the wrens and chickadees they got a little testy, so we gave up this year and let Kibitz have the whole development to himself.
Sign #5. Tiny cute, totally ridiculous plants appear. These violas in little terra cotta pots came from a basic, no-frills garden center. You just never know what you'll find in the most unlikely places.
Sign #6. Burt starts bringing home fruit and vegetables to carve into jack-'o-lanterns.
Sign #7. The flowers in the strawberry bed start forming into berries. In a few weeks we will be eating fresh berries and shopping for Halloween decorations!
Sign #8. No matter how many plants we already have, we still need more.
Sign #9. Something you thought had been trampled to death by the guy you hired to prune the trees suddenly reappears after a few years absence. Honestly, I'd totally given up on these Trilliums.
Okay, maybe not everyone is suffering from seasonal allergies.
Bwahahaha . . . spooky is always in season!
Thanks for stopping by, see you soon.
