Today I had an optometrist appointment and I forgot about how hard it is to see after they dilate your eyes. Now a smart, organized person would have prepared a post in advance but I'm an idiot. Last week, while I was searching for a picture of Andy Warhol's skull artwork, I kept running across photos of past road trips and vacations. Normally, I don't like to dwell on past events but buildings and landscapes are different. So this is a look back at a drive His Madness and I took from Oshkosh to Boston in the fall of 2018.
Boston Common
We don't always get the timing right when it comes to planning our fall trips but there's usually a little color here and there. It's never the same two years in a row.
Andy and Kristin at Blue Hills Reservation
We try to visit our son Andy and his wife Kristin, who live in the Boston area, a couple times a year. After cleaning out a closet or two HM and I decided a road trip was necessary and it would give us a chance to visit a few places we were interested in along the way.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Our first stop was Cleveland to check out the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We were hauling a good bit of musical equipment so it seemed appropriate. I did a post on it at the time but failed to mention it's famous architect, I.M Pei! It's an impressive building and a fun place to visit.
The Schuyler C. Townson Terrace Garden at the George Eastman House
From there we drove north to Rochester, New York to see the George Eastman Museum. It's the world's oldest museum dedicated to photography. So naturally, I took pictures of the gardens.
Boston Common
Then it was on to the Boston area. We often end up on The Common because Andy works nearby and the fall foliage is usually spectacular. It was founded in 1694 and was mainly used as a cow pasture until 1830. It's where the British were camped when they left for the Battle of Lexington and Concord and everyone from Martin Luther King Jr. to Mikhail Gorbachev have given speeches there.
The Golfer at the Edward Gorey House
One day we went out on Cape Cod and stopped by the
Edward Gorey House. I did a post on it but still haven't been able to find anything about this golfer in his garden.
Fallingwater, Mill Run, Pennsylvania
After leaving Boston we spent a couple of days in Philadelphia before driving across Pennsylvania. About an hour from Pittsburgh is Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. Having toured Taliesen not that long ago it was interesting to see this unique house.
There's a lot to see in Pittsburgh and we'll have to make a point to return but we did enjoy looking around the Andy Warhol Museum and playing with the interactive exhibits.
Union Pier, Michigan
Our last day on the road was spent exploring Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan. His Madness grew up in South Bend, Indiana and spent many summers in the park. We hadn't been on a road trip in many years, it was interesting but took a very, very long time. I'm looking forward to getting on a plane someday soon!
Thanks for stopping by, see you (hopefully, more clearly) tomorrow!
