Flint Corn

I'm starting to relate to that pumpkin on the left. Time is flying by!

Last Thursday was the Harvest Moon which I overlooked because it rained here all week long. The sun was absent, too. Still, I'm sorry I missed it even though to me it's mainly a reminder to move my house plants inside and pick whatever can't handle a frost from the garden. Currently, it's just another waning gibbous moon but it will be full again on Halloween! Hope it doesn't snow, ha!

While Ivy was getting pumpkins last week she decided to pick up some decorative corn. While I was searching for the politically correct, technical name of it, I learned some interesting stuff. There are six major variants; dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, flour corn, popcorn and sweetcorn. What Ivy bought is flint corn, so called because the kernels have a hard outer layer which is "hard as flint".

Her original plan was to braid the husks together to form a swag to hang on the side of the house by the patio door. She planned on following some how-to directions and videos she found online.

Burt had to reassure himself that sweetcorn season is really over.

First, some husks had to be removed to see if they would work as an Hercule Poirot mustache. You can never have too many Halloween costumes.

Next, there were quite a few stalks to remove.

Then some silk was discovered and put to use as a forelock.

Eventually they got back to work.

Until production was halted again for a rescue.

Finally, they gave up trying to braid the husks and just bunched them all together with rubber bands. The result was pretty awful, ha! That's okay, nobody will even see it if the squirrels discover it first! Maybe we should look for a nice artificial wreath?

Thanks for stopping by, see you tomorrow!
