With just four weeks to go, it's time to start decorating. It's always fun to see how the new pieces can add a different perspective to the old favorites. Then there are the ones, mostly bought online, that aren't what you were expecting and don't work with anything at all.
Since we're still in the midst of a heat wave, it was time to cave and turn on the AC before taking on the dining room. It still didn't feel like fall but at least we were sweating less. Usually, it's the easiest room to do up because there's not that many decorations and they're easy to find. Somehow, it didn't work out that way today.
Almost every year I come across this runner and wonder why I never use it. Then once it's on the table, I remember how weirdly shiny the fabric is and how it won't lay flat. Why do I keep forgetting that? It was an online purchase a few years ago and it looked completely different in the photos. Luckily, the back is black so the easiest solution was to turn it over. It's not perfect, but it will do.
The top of the piano has become a landing spot for new Halloween decor and Ivy's summer reading. A lot of her books just happened to have black covers and it's actually looking pretty spooky as it is, so it may just stay that way this season. The Haunted Mansion gargoyle candle holders came from the Disney Store. I thought they could be hung on the wall but apparently they're made to just sit on a shelf also they're green not black. They're okay and maybe I'll find the right place for them soon.
One great online purchase was this pair of cat bookends from Michaels. They were inexpensive and I was surprised at how detailed they are.
The kitties are wearing glasses and using magnifiers to read. Not sure that makes a lot of sense or why they were with the Halloween decor but they're cute anyway.
Then there's the banner that is twice as large as the description said it was. Burt got it hung up easily enough but why did I think "Beware" was a good thing for a banner to say?
The last one of the dining room decor surprises was probably the most unexpected of all. Our previous string of flame-type lights quit working last year so I just ordered a new set thinking they would all be pretty much the same. Ha! Not sure I've ever seen such a fancy set of lights before. It's going to take awhile to screw in all twenty-four light bulbs without breaking them! So those are the hits and misses (so far), nothing too terrible. My biggest mistake was thinking the dining room could be decorated in an couple hours.
Thanks for stopping by, see you soon!
