In the Garden

With our first frost only a few weeks away, it's time for the Crew to head out to the garden and get their hands dirty! It's 75 degrees at the moment but the high for tomorrow is predicted to be only 57! They had better work fast. Apart from the crazy temperature swings, there are plenty of other signs that autumn is here.

The leaves on the oak trees have begun to turn.

The Habaneros are ripe.

The crabapples are all set to make a huge mess on the ground.

Last minute chores include potting up the winter pansies. They were supposed to go in the front window boxes until way too many big spiders decided to make themselves at home. The pansies will be just fine in these pots until the spiders move on.

Currently, our backyard has exploded in Rudbeckias. They self-seed like crazy and somehow, lots of them escaped being pulled out last spring. You never know what Mother Nature has in store for you.

Burt herded the plastic flamingoes closer to the patio so he can keep an eye on them.

The pink petunias are clashing with all the autumnal colors but the bees love them.

There are always a few things that have to stay in the raised beds until the bitter end. Our backyard used to be thick with little white cabbage butterflies all summer long and well into the fall. Then one day, they simply disappeared. For the past couple of years I've planted cabbages specifically to bring them back and every once in awhile one or two can be seen flitting about. Since this lot is full of holes, something must be eating them. Now I just can't bring myself to pick them for fear of destroying future generations of butterflies!

The Skeleton Crew has taken care of some minor chores and now they can relax and enjoy the season. There are no big plans for new plantings this fall, maybe just adding a few extra daffodils near the front steps if there's time. They can take it easy until all those crabapples fall off the trees, ha!

Thanks for stopping by, see you tomorrow!
